7 wonders of my world

1. Sky. I once stopped on my walk home from work to stare up at the sky. I was not far from my house, on the edge of my neighbour’s driveway specifically, and I stood with my legs firmly apart and my neck stretching for the heavens. I don’t want to go into describing the sky because you know what it looks like, but allow me to relate a story of cause and effect to you: The sky was so marvellous that I managed to fall over whilst standing still. That’s how powerful the sky is. How wondrous. I don’t know what more proof you need. When I got up, they sky was just as marvellous, and even, maybe, slightly triumphant.

2. Valentine. If anyone has information regarding the identity of Tor’s secret admirer please contact 1800 HEART4TOR immediately. All information provided will be treated with the strictest confidentiality. I would simply like to thank the person responsible for the chocolates. I like the milk ones.

3. Novel. If you can write a novel, I admire you fully, right down to my underwear and probably further. I haven’t tried yet, but even the thought is too daunting. I cower. I write lists. And that is all.

4. Sandwich. Joey ‘Baby Kangaroo’ Tribiani is not as stupid as he seems. He, for example, understands the supremacy of a sandwich. Sandwiches vary in their size and composition. So you can eat a sandwich when you are a little bit hungry or a lot bit hungry. And you cut them in half and in half again and in half again and again and again, which gives you even greater capacity to specifically meet your needs of appetite. The composition can include pretty much anything you want, from tuna and cheese to pumpkin and chicken and fruit chutney. Vegemite and butter hits the spot. Honey. Egg and lettuce. Sultanas and mayo. Rare is the instance when a composition will not please. Sandwiches rock. Utterly.

5. Tea. I like when the milk forms a cloud, spreads out like a nuclear explosion. I like when the green tea is smooth, not bitter. I like wandering away from my desk, into the kitchen, blue mug in hand. I like my tea canister. I like teapots. I like chatting over tea. I like being quiet over tea. I like trying new teas. I like buying new cups. I like smelling tea before the water is poured. Most of all, I like that tea time is always, it’s not partial to the clock. I can always go for tea. Served with a sandwich. In a good, round cup.

6. Tree. Have you ever wondered why it is that when you draw a tree, the branches always look slightly off, and yet, when you look at a tree, it has branches going, twisting, anywhere it wants. You would think it would be easy to draw that randomness, but it’s not. The reason for this is that trees are perfect. Nature is perfect. In the words of Virginia Woolf:

Wood is a pleasant thing to think about. It comes from a tree; and trees grow, and we don’t know how they grow. For years and years they grow, without paying attention to us, in meadows, in forests, and by the side of rivers – all things one likes to think about.

Also, I cannot draw. And probably, neither can you.

7. Dog. I think dogs speak for themselves. Woof, woof, they say. And then they jump onto my lap and accept my cuddle and love me forever, regardless, regardless. Babies are kind of the same. I really like babies, too.

6. The tree thing, so well said. I've always wondered the same thing. How when you draw it, it just doesn't look quite right but the real thing is not particularly in any order either, it just seems right.

I agree whole heartedly. I just thought I found it particularly difficult because I am artistically retarded... but now I think it might be more than that. But it's probably mostly because I'm really bad at drawing stuff.

I bet you can actually draw them, Emma. You're a liar. Or just modest.

Freya, I bet you can't. Sorry. It's true.
