1. An elephant. It’s sitting in the back corner, beneath a calendar showing March and five kittens piled amongst balls of red wool in a basket. The elephant smokes a cigar, raising its trunk to let the smoke bounce off the roof of my head and spread through my mind. The kittens’ eyes itch and they tuck their weak heads into the balls of wool. They whine. The elephant looks up at the calendar, stubs out the cigar, and yawns the rest of the afternoon away. Night comes and goes. The next morning comes and goes. I don’t suppose the elephant has anyone to talk to.
